 loading light to reduce noise
so my crusty old man friend wants to be able to shoot out his backdoor without disturbing his neighbors too much. so he wants me to load some .38 rounds pretty light.
how light can I go? using unique and lead cast semi wadcutters?
will it reduce noise very much?
How close are the neighbors and is crusty f***er in town?

outside city limits, so it's legal. neighbors are maybe a couple hundred yards away, give or take 50 yards

Re: loading light to reduce noise
If there is one thing guns excel at, it is making noise.
If you are going to download a lot, shorten the case by about half. Then, I'd say, find the lightest .38 caliber round you can, and load one over a grain of Unique and see if it has 1, the force to push the projectile out of the gun, and 2 how much noise it makes to see if you are on a fools quest or not.

Re: loading light to reduce noise
One caliber comes to mind for crusty one who don't want to disturb. Airsoft. next loudest .22 super colibri after that, .22short. and both of those will be okay for a couple hundred yards, and honestly unless he is trying to hide the fact that he is shooting, a .38 ain't gonna be unbearable at all at 200-250yds. unless the neighbors are skiing faggots with sweater vests and hot cocoa on the brain

Re: loading light to reduce noise
The .38 case is relatively long. If you are going to reduce the powder levels greatly, you are likely to run into the same issues that those that reload .45 Colt do. Namely that it was designed as a black powder cartridge, and modern smokeless powders generate a lot more energy with a lot less powder. The small amount of powder in a big case can both move far enough away from the primer so it won't ignite, or possibly, have a reaction with the air that increases the pressure to unsafe levels. Use a case trimmer to trim it down.
