 Options for first handguns
I went over some of the potential guns I'm considering at the moment: Revolvers: Smith & Wesson Model 10 (.38 Special, 6 round capacity) - (first gun I ever shot) while a 4 inch barrel would be more accurate if I wanted to get one for CCW, I'd like the 2 inch barrel (however I haven't seen very many available besides online). I've considered the Model 64 as well, its technically the same gun anyway. Smith & Wesson Model 27 or Model 28 Highway Patrolman (357 Magnum/.38 Special +P, 6 rounds) - I haven't shot a .357 magnum but someone once told me if you can shoot a .44 magnum anything else less than that is not as bad. Two guns in one, which is very convenient, I'd go for the 4 inch model or the 6 1/2 inch barrel (oh and what the hell if I could find a 8 3/8 inch barrel I wouldn't mind that either :3 ) Taurus Model 44 (.44 Magnum, 6 rounds)- I know Taurus isn't the highest top of the line brand but having shot this particular model I ended up liking it, the trigger is a little heavier than the Smith but I had no issues with that. What is there to say about the caliber? Well they've had plenty of monologues and introductions in films but for me the only explanation it ever needs is already written on steel: ".44 MAGNUM", however is it really practical? Taurus Model 66 (.357 Magnum, 7 rounds) - Smiths are Expensive but would paying less for the extra round in the cylinder be worth it? Taurus Model 650 (CIA) (.357 Magnum, 5 Rounds) A snubby with a hard punch. DAO and comes in a blued or stainless finish, Looks like a S&W Centennial on Steroids, is a snub nose .357 magnum wise? And there you have it, my current choices at the moment for a first gun and I have to pick ONE of these ( I'm not exactly loaded with money to get all of them right away) But any of the Revolver gurus or anyone who has owned these guns that can help me come up with a firm decision would be greatly appreciated. P.S: No automatics are mentioned because I have no experience with them. I've shot Three revolvers and I liked them all .

 Re: Options for first handguns
I would not suggest a 2" for your first gun especially not a 357 mag they are not fun to shoot alot. At the same time I get why you like snubbies they are suppa sekZ. But if it were me I would start with one of these http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php ... ts_id/3103Smiths are the gold standard in revolvers for a reason. getting into one for under 3 bills is a hell of a deal, I have a pair of them. For a snubbie look at the Charter arms undercover, CDNN is selling them right now for 279.00 NIB, and I would take one over a Taurus anyday.

 Re: Options for first handguns
Thanks for all the feedback, I'm starting to lean away from the idea of a snub nose, I do prefer the idea of a 4 inch barrel being the minimum for a revolver, I loved the Model 10 when I first shot it and I still like it, but a .357 magnum will give me the option for both .357 and .38 Special. Then again I could get both >:D hahaha. Looking at the filed down hammers for those 64s gave me an idea, I could get a Model 10 HB and have it customized as a DAO. I like blued steel X)

 Re: Options for first handguns
Is this a first handgun for carry, or for shooting? You've got to do both, I know, but if your thinking about carrying this gun, it brings up a whole different idea.
If your planning on carry, you've got to go with the little snubbie. Yeah, it sucks for full house .357, but will still stomach .38 loads. You'll carry it, and won't run as much of a risk deafening yourself if you have to touch it off without hearing protection.
If it's range use only, my personal preference would not be on that list. I'm sure smiths are great guns, I've just never had one. I'd recommend a Ruger gp100 or if you want to go .44 mag, New Blackhawk. They are going to fall on the price range between the Taurus and the Smith. Both are fine products, but the Ruger will take more punishment that at least the Taurus.

 Re: Options for first handguns
I've only shot one Smith. As I said and that was the model 10 which was a dream for me to shoot. Its extremely accurate and a bit snappy, the one I shot had after market hogue grips (which if you've seen most M10s they have the slender wood grips). I recommend it to anyone that wants to shoot a Smith and its one of the classics, produced in 1899 and originally designated as the M&P revolver before the company started numbering their guns. Iit served Military and LEO from 1920 to about the early 90s. And if you go on the Smith & Wesson site you can still find a Model 10 for sale MSRP at $719, over 6,000,000 have been produced and you can find them used for less than $300. You can also check out the Model 64 which is the same gun but in Stainless Steel. Sorry I tend to rant sometimes X), I wouldn't mind shooting a Ruger revolver or one of their pistols for that matter. Especially if they are from the older P Series line, they look rugged enough to me.

if money is an issue, check out Charter Arms. they make all the models you would be interested in, and they are about $150 less than the smiths or rugers.
