Donald Trump was sold to America as “the most pro-gun president ever.” That was the pitch. That was the slogan. But let’s be honest: his record has never matched the hype.
This is the same president who banned bump stocks. The same guy who pushed for national red flag laws and famously said, “Take the guns first, due process later.” That doesn’t sound pro-gun. That sounds like the exact opposite.
And now? Reports say his Department of Justice is openly talking about whether transgender people should be banned from owning firearms — by classifying them as “mentally defective” based on how the medical establishment labels gender dysphoria.
This Is Straight-Up Anti-Gun
Let me be clear: I don’t care how you feel about trans people, gay people, immigrants, or anyone else. That’s not the issue here. The issue is the government deciding who gets rights and who doesn’t.
If you’re cheering this on because you personally don’t like transgender folks, you’re not pro-gun. You’re anti-gun. Because once you give the government permission to take guns away from them, you’ve set the precedent for them to take guns away from you.
That’s how this game works. They chip away group by group until there’s no one left to fight for you.
Freedom Is Messy, and That’s the Point
Freedom isn’t about protecting the people you like. Freedom means protecting people you don’t like, people you don’t agree with, people who live in ways that make you uncomfortable. Because the Second Amendment doesn’t say, “shall not be infringed… unless you’re trans.”
It doesn’t carve out exceptions. It doesn’t say, “unless you drink too much,” “unless you’re a weirdo,” or “unless your lifestyle makes me cringe.” It says shall not be infringed. Period.
That’s the price of liberty. It’s risky. It’s uncomfortable. But it’s freedom. And freedom is more important than safety every single time.
The Slippery Slope Is Real
If Trump’s DOJ can label transgender people as “mentally defective” today, then tomorrow a different president can use the same logic against veterans, gun owners who drink, people who smoke weed, or anyone else they decide doesn’t fit the mold.
We already saw it with bump stocks. That ban laid the groundwork for banning force reset triggers and even 80% builds. Once the framework is in place, the government never stops at just one restriction.
Don’t Be a Hypocrite
You can’t say you’re pro-gun while cheering for carve-outs that strip rights from people you personally don’t like. That’s hypocrisy. That’s weakness. And it’s exactly the kind of thinking that has been killing the Second Amendment for decades.
If you voted for Trump thinking he’d be different this time around, now’s the time to hold him accountable. Tell him and his DOJ: this is not what we voted for, and this is not what “shall not be infringed” means.
Bottom Line
I don’t care if you’re trans, gay, straight, a nun, a weirdo like me who’s open to polygamy — it doesn’t matter. If you’re a law-abiding American, you have the right to own a firearm. Full stop.
Trump’s DOJ floating the idea of banning guns for millions of people isn’t pro-gun. It’s anti-gun. And it’s a dangerous precedent that gun owners on all sides should reject without hesitation.
Because if you’re okay with the government taking their guns today, don’t cry tomorrow when they come for yours.
